History at Linaker Primary School

At Linaker Primary School, our History curriculum reflects our belief that we are one team where everyone belongs. Through our values of togetherness, empathy, aspiration and mutual respect, we inspire pupils to be curious about the past and understand how history continues to shape the world they live in today.

Our curriculum is inclusive, ambitious and knowledge-rich, ensuring all pupils, including those with EAL, SEND and disadvantaged backgrounds, can succeed. A strong emphasis on language and vocabulary enables pupils to confidently discuss historical events, people and concepts, helping them to communicate their understanding and engage in thoughtful discussion and debate.

In the Early Years, children begin to develop an understanding of the past through stories, familiar experiences, significant events and the lives of people around them. They learn to recognise changes over time, compare past and present and begin asking questions about the world before them.

This foundation is built upon throughout the school, with pupils studying a carefully sequenced and coherent history curriculum. Through our use of Opening Worlds in Key Stage 2, pupils develop a rich understanding of chronology, historical concepts and the connections between different periods of history. Knowledge is deliberately revisited and built upon, enabling pupils to deepen their understanding over time.

History at Linaker is driven by enquiry, with pupils encouraged to think critically, evaluate evidence and consider different perspectives. They explore the achievements, challenges and contributions of significant individuals and civilisations, developing an understanding of how people and events have influenced societies and shaped the modern world.

We want our pupils to be inspired by the lives of those who have changed the course of history. By learning about courageous leaders, innovators, reformers and changemakers, pupils develop aspirations for their own futures and recognise that they too can make a positive difference in the world.

We promote empathy and mutual respect through the study of diverse histories, helping pupils understand the experiences, beliefs and choices of people from different times and cultures. This enables them to appreciate the complexity of the past and its relevance to life today.

By the end of Year 6, pupils are confident, knowledgeable and reflective historians who can think critically about the past, understand its impact on the present and feel inspired to shape the future through their own actions, character and contributions.
