Geography at Linaker Primary School

At Linaker Primary School, our Geography curriculum reflects our belief that we are one team where everyone belongs. Through our values of togetherness, empathy, aspiration and mutual respect, we nurture pupils’ curiosity about the world and foster a deep respect for diverse people, cultures and environments.

Our curriculum is inclusive, ambitious and knowledge-rich, ensuring all pupils—including those with EAL, SEND and disadvantaged backgrounds—can succeed. A strong emphasis on language and vocabulary enables pupils to confidently communicate their understanding and access increasingly complex geographical concepts, promoting respectful dialogue and shared learning.

In the Early Years, children begin by exploring their immediate environment, observing seasonal change, learning about their local area and developing early mapping and comparison skills. These experiences build a strong sense of place, belonging and mutual respect for their surroundings and community.

This foundation is built upon throughout the school, with pupils studying their local area, our nearest city Liverpool, the UK and a wide range of global locations. In Key Stage 2, our use of Opening Worlds enables pupils to develop powerful, well-sequenced knowledge and deepen their understanding over time.

Geography at Linaker is driven by enquiry, with each unit framed around key questions that promote critical thinking and connection-making. Pupils explore how human and physical processes interact, studying themes such as rivers, climate, migration and global interdependence, while developing respect for different perspectives.

We promote empathy, mutual respect and global citizenship, encouraging pupils to consider different viewpoints and understand their role in creating a sustainable and fair future.

By the end of Year 6, pupils are confident, articulate and thoughtful geographers who understand the interconnectedness of the world, demonstrate respect for others and are motivated to make a positive difference.
